You’ll have to remind yourself repeatedly that trees can’t really walk and talk. The characterisation of Rocket and Groot, using CGI and motion-capture technology, is amazingly convincing. The Marvel Studios’ Guardians Of The Galaxy films have always been among the most reliably funny, quirky and entertaining of the Marvel movies – but there’s real heart there too. And not forgetting Adam (Will Poulter), designed by the golden-hued Sovereign race – who the Guardians irritated previously – as a relentless assassin set on wiping out our heroes. A planet that closely resembles Earth, but populated by a variety of human-animal hybrids? Check. A squidgy organic planetoid housing a worryingly unregulated scientific lab? Check. Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) – reluctantly helped by the alternative-timeline version of Peter’s late girlfriend Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) – are ready to face anything to help their friend, no matter how weird.Īnd there’s plenty of weird. With Rocket incapacitated, it’s down to the rest of the Guardians to head out into space and find the cure that will revive him.
